Digitizing photographs is just as intricate as creating the photographs themselves.  There are many details to consider before you begin a photo digitization project.  The guide that I have prepared will help to distinguish what is useful for digitizing photographs and other digitization projects.  Included with the guide there is a section on considerations for digitizing photographs that involves selection, collection development of digital photographs and possible pre-treatment of damaged photographs.  Also included is a list of resources that provides many helpful sources, processes, procedures and guides.
The familiarity with photographic processes and formats can be hepful to an archivist.  This knowledge can provide context, historic information, creator information, time period and other information that is helpful when making that record accessible to the public.  This kind of information is also very important when considering long-term preservation of the original photographs.
